Random stuff, reflections on the meaning of life and death, humour, self-deprecation, a bit of bad poetry.

My son was accepted into the Liberal Arts program at a local college. I’m happy for him, envious almost, because I too had hoped to go into the arts (literature or music) at his age but had been dissuaded by my pragmatic father to go into a field of study that was more guaranteed to land me a job at the end of it: health science.

Looking back, I never really enjoyed my science classes except maybe for biology. Despite my OCD tendencies for measuring ingredients when it comes to baking, I really sucked at labs, once nearly blowing myself and my classmates up in organic chemistry by making bromide gas outside the fume hood.

My favourite classes were the humanities, one in particular: Ancient Religious Thought. It’s nearly forty years later and I still remember some of the class discussions.

Don’t get me wrong. I love my job, one that has given me financial security and stability. A job that allowed me to pursue my true passions as hobbies.

My boy’s favourite subject is history, with philosophy and ethics side by side in second place. He’s done well in all subjects but has decided to follow his bliss, at least for now.

Readers, did you follow your dreams after high school? Any regrets?

Wow. First Congrats to your son on his acceptance. As for me, no. I always wanted to be a veterinarian but my whole life I was told I was stupid. I tried when I was 18 to go to college, but I didn’t know how to study because I was always pushed aside and never taught. I didn’t actually attend college until I was 35, to study music. Not what I wanted, but it was always something that I loved.

Thanks, Jean, though it makes me really sad that you were made to feel stupid. My son had lots and lots of support to get to this point: occupational therapy, special educators, tutors, etc. He would never ever have made it if he had believed he wasn’t worthy. I’m sorry you had to go through that because clearly you are intelligent and kind and talented. Thank goodness you found your way later in life. Ever think about starting your own blog? Maybe you already have one. Just saying …

I am loving all your blog posts, Sharon. Congrats to your son. I did indeed follow my dreams of becoming a Phys. Ed. teacher and have not regretted it one bit.

Thanks a million, Kelly! Thank goodness you went into Phys. Ed! My attitude towards physical activity and fitness would have been much more positive if I’d had a gifted teacher like you. 😊

    Congratulations to your son!
I did not follow my dreams when I went to CEGEP, as I chose Acounting. My dream job would have been to be an architect, but teaching was not something I did not want to do. I am glad I became a teacher, but there are times when I wish I had tried architecture. Maybe when I retire!

Aha, that explains why you are such a math whiz! I am glad you became a teacher because like Kelly above, you are a gifted teacher and have made a world of difference to so many young people. Yes, the opportunity will be there when you retire. I am hoping to take a photography course when I stop working.

Your comment makes me sad, Preet. I want you to feel joy in your life. Perhaps, as our parents did, we hope to live our dreams through our children. Except more often than not, we put the same pressure on them that our parents put on us. xo

  6. We are on the same boat. I am a HVAC technician with a deep love for the liberal arts. Maybe he can share his studies with you

    1. I always wanted to be a English teacher, but my bad choices made that extremely hard. I’m still working on making that dream come true though. Hopefully, you are too

Funny because I could really use an HVAC technician right now. Good tradesmen and women are a precious commodity. I am so grateful when I find a good resource.

How marvellous that you are pursuing your passion. Tell me, do you write?
