Bird noises at the avian vet. Reading the same page over and over again as wandering mind scrolls through worse case scenarios.

Feathers and bone encase his crackling lungs and tiny, beating heart. This small thing with wings, this source of daily joy, has embedded itself deeply in my mundane life.

Tell me, how can one become so attached to something that weighs a mere 22 grams?

Sharon, would you rather have your little birdie on top of your head, rather than the dove? Easy to change it!

Mike, it’s sweet of you to ask but do leave your drawing as is. The sick bird is my parrotlet Eugene and he would never go on my head, only my shoulder and only if I was offering millet. Our cockatiel Betty White, on the other hand, regularly nests in my hair and Ian’s. Xo

I could put those critters on your shoulders. And now that I’m opening my mind to possibilities i wish I’d put a Canada Goose on your head!

I’ll leave it up to you then but I am fine with what you have already provided!

Little Eugene. In the hospital. I miss his little blue attitude. 22 grams indeed. Hoping for a good outcome.

I’m so sorry to hear that you little Blue feather fluff is sick. My 3 brats, Trixi, Mardi Gras, and Ginny want to send you and Eugene lots of beaky kisses and feather buzzes, and of course many many good healing vibes. My heart is with you Sharon. I hope all will be ok! ❤

Thanks so much, Bonnie. I am so sad right now. I know you can imagine the feeling. Eugene has been hospitalized since yesterday evening and is no better albeit in stable condition. We will hang on a little longer to see if things improve. He is too sick and tiny to test so they are providing supportive measures now: hydration and tube feeding. Xoxo

If there’s a video, I can’t watch it – what a sad, touching and wonderful tale.

Aww … thanks, Kiki. The video is sound only and does not feature our bird. Instead you will hear the happy chatter of other birds boarded at the avian vet’s. It is quite delightful. When he is well, our little guy usually talks and sings.

Shucks … too bad. Then again, there must be plenty of outdoor birds in your country.

  6. I hope your Eugene has recovered. Growing up I had a canary, my Uncle Sydney gave me him when we visited his home in Cannes. We never thought our poodle, Bijou, even noticed him until he was gone and Bijou spent a week sitting in his basket, which was below Orville’s cage, mourning.
I think it’s not the weight of the person or animal, it is our longing for them to sing freely that causes the place they possess in our hearts to feel so heavy when they are suffering. Much love.

Thankfully, Eugene is recovering. And you are right, his weight is so not proportional to how much we love him. A couple of days ago, he sat on my shoulder preening my hair. When I tilted my head towards his little body, he tilted his towards mine and closed his eyes. We sat like that for at least a minute before a crick in my neck forced me to move. I feel so blessed.
Thank you for your kind words, Louise. Xo

  7. Hello ‘Ruby’ – I’ve been thinking about you and all that is going on, sending prayers of well-being and good health. Thank you for being ‘out there’ on the frontlines, taking care of people in these difficult days.

PS — I’m so delighted to read that Eugene is recovering! — what a lovely image you’ve painted with your words of you and Eugene sitting, heads tilted together. ❤

Hi Louise! Thank you so much for your sweet note. Today I cracked a little when I got a call telling me my cataract surgery in April is cancelled. Of course, I knew it would be. I just didn’t expect to be so emotional. An accumulation of stress, I think. I hope you and your family are coping as well as can be expected. Everyone is anxious and on high alert. Health care workers are no different and as there is no precedent to this crisis, we are learning on the go too. Thank goodness Eugene has recovered. A small blessing that now weighs 24 grams. Hurrah! Take good care. 😘
